With a Diploma In Graphic Design from MacEwan University and a BFA from the University of Calgary (printmaking and drawing), Calgarian Heather Urness is continually inspired by the visual world.

While playing fast and loose with traditional printmaking techniques Heather continues to seek out and work with environmentally friendly printing methods and materials…combining the best of both processes.

Her current work explores the intersection between nature and constructed environments. Birds, for example, will use/recycle materials that they find in their environment to build their nests. In a similar fashion, women, historically, would also use/recycle materials to better their living spaces. By placing these seemingly disparate elements within the same image there is the possibility to see something new or to understand, on a different level, the familiar.

Heather is very passionate about introducing printmaking to the uninitiated and collaborating with the converted. She has had the pleasure of teaching all kinds of art classes, to all kinds of people for over 30 years. Heather is an active member and board member of Alberta Printmakers (A/P) and maintains a busy home studio.

I dwell in possibilities

We shall not cease from exploration. At the end of all our exploring will be to arrive

where we started and know the place for the first time
